Student Teachers - Insurance Coverage
Student teachers working in the District are covered for:
- Workers' compensation
- General liability
Coverage for student teachers is the same as coverage for teachers who are DPS employees. What triggers the insurance coverage is whether the employee is working within the course and scope of their employment. This phrase has a lot of legal definition. It is essentially that the employee was doing what they were supposed to be doing, how they were supposed to be doing it. To determine this, the first place to look is a job description. The second place to look would be any supplemental instructions that have been given about the job. Generally, if student teachers are doing the job they have been asked to do, they are going to be within the course and scope of their employment.
Recent Question: Can student teachers take students into the community unsupervised? Whether student teachers are supervised all the time is an operational issue. The district may direct the amount of supervision required for student teachers. The institution that sends these student teachers to the District for training may have requirements for the amount of supervision.
