Working With Hazardous Materials
We are surrounded by hazardous materials both at school and at home. Cleaning materials, art and science supplies, gasoline and medicines are only a few of the substances that we encounter. Follow these guidelines to prevent accidents:
Read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before using a chemical for the first time.
Follow the instructions in the MSDS on how to use, store and dispose of the chemical.
Store flammables in an approved container or in an approved flammables cabinet.
Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (i.e., gloves, goggles, respiratory equipment, etc.) when using a hazardous substance.
Keep all hazardous substances locked up and out of children's reach.
Don't transfer cleaning materials or other substances into food, beverage or unlabelled containers.
Keep the Poison Control Center and other emergency phone numbers posted by your telephone.
In an emergency, call the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Control Center at (800) 222-1222, a doctor or 911, as necessary, for instructions.
If you are instructed to go to an emergency room, take the poisonous substance or container with you.
