Working With Hazardous Materials

We are surrounded by hazardous materials both at school and at home. Cleaning materials, art and science supplies, gasoline and medicines are only a few of the substances that we encounter. Follow these guidelines to prevent accidents:

  • Read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before using a chemical for the first time.

  • Follow the instructions in the MSDS on how to use, store and dispose of the chemical.

  • Store flammables in an approved container or in an approved flammables cabinet.

  • Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (i.e., gloves, goggles, respiratory equipment, etc.) when using a hazardous substance.

  • Keep all hazardous substances locked up and out of children's reach.

  • Don't transfer cleaning materials or other substances into food, beverage or unlabelled containers.

  • Keep the Poison Control Center and other emergency phone numbers posted by your telephone.

  • In an emergency, call the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Control Center at (800) 222-1222, a doctor or 911, as necessary, for instructions.

  • If you are instructed to go to an emergency room, take the poisonous substance or container with you.

Refer to Board Policy EBAB-Hazardous Materials.
