15 Passenger Vans

Background
The district has been moving away from 15 passenger vans for the past four (4) years.  They have been determined to be a higher hazard when driving under certain road conditions.  These vans do not meet the standard for a school bus that is designed to transport students as safely as possible.

District Insurance
As of July 1, 2002, the Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool (CSDSIP) does not provide insurance coverage for rented, leased or loaned 15 passenger vans. When groups of students travel in leased vehicles, vehicles other than 15 passenger vans must be rented. Renting 15 passenger vans is not authorized by the District. Buying the rental insurance does not relieve the District of potential liabilty. Using 15 passenger vans provided by other organizations or individuals at no cost to Denver Public Schools should be avoided and will not be covered by District insurance.

Alternative Transportation
The district has three activity buses.  Teachers can be trained to drive these buses.  There is a charge to use these buses.  For every school outing we should plan to transport students using District transportation, if available.  The following is a list of transportation choices in order of preference:

  1. District transportation
  2. Public transportation
  3. Employee vehicles
  4. Parent vehicles (need copies of license and proof of vehicle insurance)
