Climbing Wall Procedures
This is the process and procedures to be followed for schools planning to construct climbing walls. If you have questions, please call Larry Williams, Manager, Facility Planning at (720) 423-4122.
Climbing Wall process:
-
This review process will be followed for each structure on a site-by-site basis.
-
Denver Public Schools shall require the installing contractor to acquire a 1-C Permit (Climbing Wall) through the Fire Prevention Bureau and the Denver Building Department.
-
The contractor shall be required to have as a minimum a Class B General Contractors License for the City and County of Denver.
-
The contractor shall be required to prepare drawings and specifications for the design of the indoor rock climbing structure. Drawings and specifications shall be prepared and wet stamped by a structural engineer registered and licensed in the State of Colorado.
-
The design shall be submitted to the Fire Prevention Bureau for review to the attention of personnel as designated by the Fire Prevention Bureau.
-
The design shall conform to the requirements of the current adopted Building and Fire Codes for interior Flame-Spread.
-
The Fire Prevention Bureau will complete the review within two (2) weeks of receipt.
-
Upon completion of construction, the work shall be inspected by the City and County of Denver Building Inspection Division and the Denver Fire Department to confirm the structure has been built in accordance with the approved drawings and specifications.
DPS Design requirements:
- A project manager will be assigned to oversee the installation of a climbing wall.
- Walls shall not cover any existing electrical or mechanical devices, grills, etc.
- Walls must be provided with measures to prevent unsupervised use. This is normally a provision to cover the lower portion of the wall with a matt which is secured in place through a cable and padlock.
- Locations and configurations must be approved by DPS Construction Services.
- Copies of all permits and stamped drawings shall be provided to DPS Construction Services.
