Animals in the Classroom

Animals in the classroom are wonderful educational tools. However, under a Denver city ordinance (Denver Municipal Code, Chapter 8, Article I, Section 8-2(b)), the following species are not permitted:

  • Poisonous reptiles
  • Monitor lizards and teglis
  • Non-poisonous snakes exceeding six (6) feet in length
  • Crocodilians
  • Poisonous spiders
  • Scorpions
  • Certain other species of nonhuman mammals (see code for exceptions)

If you have a snake longer than six feet or any other animals listed above, please call Animal Control for the City of Denver at 303-698-0076 (press “0”). If you need assistance, call the Animal Control number listed above.

Animals Not Covered by Insurance - The District's insurance coverage does not apply to liability for "damages" that arise out of:  "Animals not used for the purpose of educational instruction or any event involving the use of animals such as rodeos and animals used in fund raising events." (E.31.b)
