What is Workers' Compensation?

Denver Public Schools provides workers' compensation benefits in accordance with Colorado State Law. If you are injured while in the course and scope of your employment, you are entitled to collect workers' compensation benefits. Reporting injuries is the responsibility of the employee. Please complete a Notification of Injury form [Word] as soon as possible and no later than within 8 hours. The employee can either obtain an Authorization for Treatment form from their secretary or by calling the Workers' Compensation department at (720) 423-3281. Please schedule an appointment with a designated HealthOne or OccMed Colorado provider, addresses for which are listed on the Authorization for Treatment form.

What are you entitled to receive?

  1. Authorized medical care
  2. Reimbursement for authorized prescriptions
  3. Reimbursement for your mileage expense
  4. Payment for loss of wages
  5. Permanent impairment benefits
  6. Payment for disfigurement

What responsibilities do you have for your own recovery?

During the time it takes for you to recover from your injury employees have the following responsibilities:

  1. Any time missed from work as a result of your injury needs to be authorized by your HealthOne and OccMed Colorado designated provider.
  2. You need to keep your supervisor advised of any periods of time you will miss from work as a result of your injury.
  3. You are responsible to communicate with your doctor about any problems you are experiencing with your injury.
  4. If you do not understand the medical treatment or care you are receiving, you need to contact the DPS Worker's Compensation Department. We are here to assist you with any problems you may experience during the course of your recovery.
  5. If you are unable to perform the essential functions of your job, modified duty is available to all of our employees. If after four months from the date of injury, you are still unable to perform the essential job function, you will be placed on Temporary Total Disability.

What else do I need to know?

  1. The DPS Workers' Compensation Division will work with you to explain your benefits and answer questions.
  2. Always include your name, the date of your injury, and your claim number on all correspondence to ensure a prompt response.
  3. Your claim adjuster is required to ask questions about how you were injured, the status and scope of your injury, and questions about related events or activities associated with your injury. This information will enable health care providers and workers' compensation staff to deliver appropriate levels of medical treatment and compensation.

The functions performed by this department:

  1. Case manage occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
  2. Provide assistance and guidance to our injured employees and supervisors.
  3. Participate in reasonable accomodation evaluations or modified duty.
  4. Oversee all claims.
  5. Authorize doctor visits.
  6. Accident investigation.

2. How soon do I need to report an injury?
Response: As soon as possible. State of Colorado statute requires all injuries to be reported within the first four (4) days of occurrence.
3. When can I schedule physical therapy appointments?
Response: Part-time employees should schedule physical therapy appointments during off time (unschedule work hours).
Full-time employees should schedule physical therapy either at the beginning or end of thei regular shift or scheduled hours of work.
4. Can I go to the Emergency Room?
Response: Only if you have a life or limb -threatening injury that requires immediate medical attention. If the injury is NOT a life or limb-threatening injury you should schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience with any of the designated HealthOne Occupational and OccMed Colorado Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinics listed above..
5. How do I reopen my claim?
Response: Contact the Workers Compensation Office staff at the phone numbers or e-mail addresses provided below. Staff will guide you through the steps to reopen your claim.
6. Do I need to seek medical attention after I fill out a First Report of Injury form?
Response: No. Only if you need to.
