November Tip of the Month

Walking Can Be a Painful Experience

Each year, about 300 DPS employees are injured while walking. These injuries cost the district about $1 million each year. About 75%, or $750,000, is spent on injuries due to just slips, trips and falls.

Be a Watchful Walker

Here's what you can do to prevent slips, trips and falls:

PAY ATTENTION TO THE PATH IN FRONT OF YOU

  • Watch for wet surfaces, especially inside building entrances, in bathrooms and cafeterias, and by drinking fountains and sinks.
  • Don't read or otherwise distract yourself while walking.
  • Avoid walking on ice and snow whenever possible. Wear appropriate footwear in winter weather.
  • Walk around hazards.

DON'T HURRY

  • Moving too fast increases your chance of missing a step. Also, you may not see a hazard in time to avoid it.

USE THE HANDRAIL ON STAIRS

  • Use the handrail on bus steps, too.
  • Don't run up or down stairs.
  • Watch for wet surfaces or objects on stairs.
  • Watch for irregular or uneven step heights.

DON'T CARRY LOADS THAT BLOCK YOUR VIEW
